Abstract
The alarming levels of recent food insecurity in the south of Madagascar have only recently made headlines; nevertheless, such an emergency was not unprecedented, as traces of evidence of food security crises within the Grand Sud region of Madagascar may be found in certain scholarly sources. This paper delves into the history of regional development discrepancies throughout Madagascar, focusing on the link between food insecurity and environmental degradation in territories most neglected by national and international development policies. The paper will also utilize IFAD project reports to outline the evolution of IFAD Projects in the south of Madagascar, thereby contributing to the scarce research on the history of food security in Madagascar, and furthermore placing socio-political factors, along with environmental factors, at the center of the current Malagasy food security crisis.
