Jobs, Innovation and Value Chains in the age of Climate Transition

From June 21 and June 24 2022, a Conference on “Jobs, Innovation and Value Chains in the age of Climate Transition” took place at the IFAD headquarters in Rome, Italy. The event was organized in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IFAD and the main Universities in Rome: the Department of Social Sciences and Economics of La Sapienza, the Centre for Economic and International Studies of University of Rome Tor Vergata, and the Department of Economics of Roma Tre University; as well as other Italian and international research institutions.

As pointed out in the event’s poster, the Conference aimed at bridging the gap between research and policy. Most importantly, it intended to offer space for innovation in the field of rural development.

The initiative seeks in particular policy relevant applied research papers addressing the challenges of the themes of the Conference. However, they could also generate food for thought to call for investments in agriculture, rural development and policy dialogue, ultimately, contributing to the improvement of new projects.

The participation of Mondo Internazionale

Mondo Internazionale was able to take part in this great initiative by joining the Call for Papers and by participating in the June Conference.

The Paper submitted to the Call was the result of a collaboration between the Division of geostrategic analysis (G.E.O.) and the Public Policy Incubator of the Association (MIPP). The two sections joined forces in the draft of “Opportunities to Reinforce Food Security in Southern Madagascar: Between Political Crises and Climate Vulnerability”.

The group directed its attention on international development projects in the south of Madagascar with the purpose of providing information on food security in the Country. In addition, it placed socio-political factors, along with environmental factors, at the center of the food security crisis, which has only recently been making headlines, but has a long history.

The Conference

The Conference saw a number of experts from all over the world meet up, offering a space for dialogue and exchange, but also a space for networking and inspiration.

Mondo Internazionale was represented by Kaitlyn Rabe - Research Director Mondo Internazionale GEO APS - and Flaminia Marchetti - Policy Analyst Mondo Internazionale HUB APS, only two of the research team to be able to make it.

The event focused on, as Kaitlyn Rabe has wonderfully put it on, “emphasizing the need for greater synergy between academic research and policy implementation to create resilience in rural areas to prevent future human, climatic, agricultural, and socio-political crises…”. Finally, it offered an amazing chance to witness what we hope will become a shift in the paradigm of development practices to solutions based on evidence.
