Mondo Internazionale APS on an Institutional Mission to Algeria: a Journey through History, Culture and Diplomacy

Chiara Merlin, member of the Steering Committee and Deputy Director of Mondo Internazionale Post, recently took part in an institutional mission to Algeria, sponsored by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

The journey began in Algiers, the vibrant capital of Africa's largest country. There, we explored the UNESCO-listed Citadel, wandered through the historic alleys of the Casbah, and visited the Great Mosque of Algiers, one of the city's architectural landmarks, all while learning about the geopolitical history behind the "White City."

From Algiers, the mission traveled to Tlemcen, where we were welcomed by the Mayor in his stunning Arab-Ottoman town hall. The day's itinerary included a visit to the Beni Add Caves and the El Mechouar Citadel, as well as a stop at the archaeological ruins of the Mansourah fortress.

Next on the itinerary was Oran, where we discovered Place du 1er Novembre, the historic Arena, and the Chapelle de Santa Cruz, before heading on to Annaba to visit the Basilica of Saint Augustine and the Roman ruins of Hippone.

The mission wrapped up with a visit to the UNESCO-listed Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania and participation in SITEV, Algeria's biggest international tourism exhibition, held in Algiers. We also had the honor of meeting the Algerian Minister of Tourism, an encounter that offered further insight into the cultural and diplomatic ties between Algeria and Italy.
