A Country in Tension Mozambique has recently become scene of violent uprisings and unrest, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. Tensions erupted following the results of the October 9, 2024, elections, when the new Frelimo party candidate, Daniel Chapo, was declared the winner with 71% of the vote
A Brief Profile of Mozambique
Located on the southeastern coast of Africa, Mozambique is a nation rich in natural resources and in a strategic positions. A former Portuguese colony, it gained independence in 1975 but was devastated by two wars that further weakened its economy and infrastructure. Today, the country continues to struggle with severe economic and social challenges, including extreme poverty exacerbated by the pandemic and frequent natural disasters that regularly impact the territory.
Mozambique has been a multiparty democratic republic since 1994. The President, serving as both Head of State and Government, is elected every five years and is responsible for appointing the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers.
The Elections and the Frelimo Party The recent elections sealed the end of Filipe Nyusi’s term, the outgoing President and long-standing member of the Frelimo party, which has been in power since 1975. Daniel Chapo, a relatively unknown candidate from the same party, achieved a victory with 71% of the vote, reaffirming Frelimo's grip on the country. However, the results immediately caused controversy, with the opposition alleging electoral fraud.
This is not the first time Mozambique has faced accusations of electoral fraud. In the past, several opposition leaders had challenged the transparency of elections, claiming they were denied victory against Frelimo. This time, however, the allegations carry more weight: preliminary data indicated a 53% lead for the opposition, while official results reversed the predictions, attributing over 60% of the votes to Chapo.
Allegations and Appeals Abroad Among potential unrest, Manuel de Araújo, a prominent member of Renamo (the main opposition party), gained international attention by presenting evidence of alleged electoral fraud in Europe. Other opposition members launched a petition to demand the nullification of the elections, hoping for intervention before protests escalated.
Explosion of Protests and Violence A few days after the report of initial results, protests erupted across the country. Initially organized by Mondlane, the opposition leader, to contest Chapo's election, the demonstrations quickly spiraled out of control following the assassination of two prominent figures close to Mondlane. This event further fueled anger and tension among protesters.
Mozambique is now in a state of growing chaos, with a growing number of deaths and injuries. The situation is so dire that South Africa has closed its borders, fearing an influx of Mozambicans fleeing the conflict.
A Crisis Without an End? The 2024 elections were seen as a potential turning point for Mozambique, a country that, despite its natural resources, suffers from poverty, corruption, and political instability. However, the shadow of alleged fraud and widespread violence seems to have severely damaged hopes for change.
The future of Mozambique now seems uncertain as the international community watches with concern. With the country stumbling on the brink of collapse, the risk of a broader conflict is real, and political leadership will face immense challenges in restoring peace and the trust of its people.
