In the extended scenario of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) a complex and dramatical history of wars, geopolitical plots and exploitation of the natural resources unravels. Congo itself and its neighbour, Rwanda, are the main characters of this story: they are involved in a tangled plot of ethnic tension, historical rivalries, and economic interests.

This story started with the Rwandan genocide in 1994: the exodus of the Hutu refugees to Congo activated ethnic tensions and contributed to the formation of armed groups, fostering a cycle of violence and instability which is currently persisting.

The March 23 Movement (M23) is one of the characters of this crisis. It is a group of rebels essentially made of members of the Tutsi ethnic minority. Rwanda was charged of actively supporting M23 through the logistic support, training, and military assistance. Even though the Rwandan government has constantly rejected these accusations, stating it is engaged in the stabilisation of the Great Lakes region, the evidence of Rwanda’s involvement in the conflict has been documented by various sources and international organisations.

The region’s rich natural resources, including gold, diamonds, cobalt and coltan (the latter essential to produce electronic devices) are at the heart of this conflict. The control of these resources has become a strategic objective for governments, militias, and local and foreign business elites, fuelling further tension and war.

The war in Congo is not only an internal issue but has attracted the attention and interference of global powers seeking to protect their interests in the region. The United States and France have condemned Rwanda’s alleged involvement in the conflict, while the country enjoys the support of other countries, including China, which has economic interests in the region.

However, it is the people of Congo who pay the highest price in this struggle for power and resources. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes because of the violence, creating one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world. The violence has caused devastating social and economic impacts, with widespread human rights violations and severe political instability undermining the country’s development and progress efforts. Despite the immense challenges, there are signs of hope and commitment to a peaceful solution. Diplomatic efforts and international mediation attempts have been undertaken to promote dialogue and end the violence.

At the same time, the road to peace remains uncertain, with many challenges and obstacles to overcome, including lack of trust between the conflicting parties, competition for resources and foreign interference. Further complications arise from the interference of regional and international armed groups that seek to take advantage of the situation, exploiting the vulnerability of local populations and fuelling chaos for their own interests. The presence of the militias and armed gangs further complicates the picture, contributing to the spread of violence and insecurity in the region. Moreover, corruption and poor governance have undermined efforts to address the deep roots of the conflict and to ensure lasting stability. Illicit financial flows linked to the exploitation of natural resources have fuelled corruption and weakened state institutions, making it more difficult to implement effective reforms and promote sustainable development.

The international community has attempted to respond to the crisis in Congo by sending peacekeeping missions and providing humanitarian assistance, but the situation remains extremely complex and difficult to resolve. The need for an inclusive political solution, taking into account the concerns and interests of all parties involved, is essential to achieve lasting peace and to allow the people of Congo to live in safety and dignity.

In conclusion, the conflict in Congo represents a humanitarian tragedy of enormous proportion and a struggle for power and resources involving local and international actors. It is crucial to keep the focus on the situation in Congo and to work with determination to find a peaceful and lasting solution that leads to the stability and well-being of the region and its people.
