Protests continue during Chaharshanbe Suri
in Iran, strong protests continue also during the fire celebration. Started in September against the government, following Mahsa Amini’s death, the clash immediately reached global echo. In occasion of traditional celebration Chaharshanbe Suri, the night before Iranian new year (Nowruz) called for three days of manifestations and strike.
Nowruz means “new day”. It is the first day of Iranian new year, one of the most ancient celebrations in the world. Although it first took place in ancient Iran, it is present also in some near countries’ calendars, like Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Nowruz is every year around 19th and 21st March, de facto coinciding with spring equinox.
Persian name, Chaharshanbe Suri, derives from the combination of two words: “wednesday” and “red”, the color of purifying fire, from zoroastrian religion (ancient Iran’s religion before Islam). According to tradition, at sunset wood is set to fire, as well as everything no more serving, in an open and free space, sometimes even jumping over fire. This year the celebration is more symbolic than ever: flames of celebration and riot started burning last night in many Iranian cities.
Mahsa Amini is not forgotten
Chaharshanbe Suri ancient celebration’s flames are today mixed with those of the protests started months ago after Mahsa Amini’s death. Mobilitations and clashes were reported in Teheran, Isfahan, Mashhad and Kamiyaran, Rasht, Saqqez and Sanandaj. During manifestations, Supreme Guide Ali Khamenei was strongly criticized and "Woman, Life, Freedom" motto, symbol of the protests exploded in September, was screamed.
Iranian newspaper Etmad had previously announced rights and democracy activists against Teheran dictatorship had declared three days of manifestations in occasion of "Chaharshanbe Suri" celebrations.
A tragic toll
After the three days of manifestations, the toll is tragic, as Jafar Miadfar, chief of medical emergencies, made official in an interview for a State television. An announcement that spread the numbers of the ongoing clash of activists, students, men and women against local authorities.
