And the Oscar goes to…
At this time, we may say to Mondo Internazionale editorial staff. Lately we’ve been talking a lot about the Oscars, leaning on some titles. On November 18th, 2024, one of us said: “Anora will win the Oscar (I hope)”. And tonight, more than any other night, our dreams soared, for me writing in a filled Anteo room, to become reality.
Once again, thanks to Oscars 2025, the most shining Hollywood night lighted up, giving the audience a show full of glamour, surprises, and moments meant to be recorded in the history of cinema.
An extraordinary Ariana Grande opened the ceremony: she fascinated the audience with such a touching version of Over the Rainbow, and her outfit change marked the first surprise of the night. By her side, Cynthia Erivo, main character in Wicked, her set mate, joined the singer in a thrilling performance. They celebrated a film which received ten nominations, and which was defined as “the perfect film to see which school was attended by those of “The wizards of Oz”.
Before entering the Dolby Theater, on the red-carpet Isabella Rossellini honoured the unrivalled David Lynch in an elegant velvet-blue dress evoking memories of the homonymous film and earrings once belonging to her mother, Ingrid Bergman.
Meanwhile, in collision course with the platforms destroying cinema – at the end Sean Baker will remind us that nothing is comparable to watching a film together in a cinema – the sacrilegious essence of the Oscar started to consolidate with Jeff Bezos or an Amazon box’s arrival on the red-carpet. While people were laughing, it was theft: it is a clear reference to the constant thefts of boxes in the United States, just on the doorways.
Then, O’ Brien held a cheerful speech against the rising prices of the Netflix subscriptions, while on the stage took turns iconic people like Robert Downey Jr., Morgan Freeman, Emma Stone and Whoopi Goldberg.
The best actor in a supporting role for Million Dollar Baby, in 2025, honours the legendary Gene Hackman before the touching carousel In Memoriam, ending with the mentioned Lynch and a thunder of endless applauses to immortal leaders.
Other than well-thought couples of presenters and the updated Conan O’ Brien, I don’t think there were many plot twists, and no, I wasn’t surprised that Timothée Chalamet didn’t win any prize.
The only positive news is Anora’s winning, a hope, as written before, in a dream who got real and reminded everyone that independent cinema is a powerful way of conveying messages. It is also a possibility for everyone to express the way they want.
Selling one’s iPhone to pay one’s rent like every pauper would do, led you on the top of the cinema. Enjoy it Sean, you’re the hope of those who want to make the big step in the world of the cinema.
Below the list of the winner. What about you? Have you seen the Oscars?
