The
UN World Food Programme
announced that the food stocks in the Gaza Strip have run out. Since
March
2nd,
Israel
has imposed a total blockage on humanitarian
aid,
denying civilians access to necessities such as food, fuel, and
medicine.
The
latest food supplies have been delivered to kitchens that prepare hot
meals for the citizens. These structures, even though they serve only
half of the population and meet 25% of the daily needs, represented a
vital support. And now they are also about to run out completely of
provisions.
It
was just on the 31st
of March
that
all the 25
bakeries
supported
by the WFP had to shut down because flour
and
fuel
were
finished. At the same time, even the two-week food
packages
for
the families ran out.
Not
only that, the situation is worsened by the drastic lack of safe
water
and
fuel for cooking. Many citizens have been forced to pick up scavenged
materials to light a fire and prepare a meal.
The
complete closure of borders
has
been going on for more than seven weeks, making it the longest
interruption of aid access in the Strip’s history. All the main
access points are blocked, preventing humanitarian aid and commercial
goods from transiting. The impact on population is devastating: the
cost
of food
has
risen to 1400%
compared
to during the ceasefire, and the availability of essential
commodities is extremely low.
The
UN
and
the WFP
warn
that malnutrition
is
skyrocketing, especially among children
under the age of 5,
pregnant
and breastfeeding women,
and elderly
people.
More than 116,000
tons
of
food assistance, which is enough to feed a
million people
for
around 4 months, are blocked at the borders, ready to be distributed
as soon as the passage is allowed.
Conditions
are rapidly deteriorating in the overcrowded shelters where hundreds
of displaced people are staying. The
UN
is warning of a rise in gender
violence
and inhuman
conditions in refugee camps. Only in the last month, half
a million new displaced people
have been registered.
Meanwhile,
Israeli military
attacks
continue,
exacerbating a situation that the UN defines as the “worst
humanitarian crisis”
since
the beginning of the conflict. The UNRWA
agency
claims that nearly 3,000
trucks
full
of aid are stuck at the borders because of the blockade, which is an
instrument of political pressure.
When
it comes to diplomacy,
U.S. President Donald
Trump
stated
that he put pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
himself to grant immediate access to food and medicine aid. The
situation in the Gaza Strip is collapsing: civilians are running out
of provisions to survive, and the few, unstable results achieved by
the ceasefire are being completely nullified.
The World Food Programme and the UN appeal to all the involved parties to grant access to aid and to respect the fundamental rights of the international humanitarian law.
